Computer Aided Drafting (CAD)

Computer-aided design uses computers to assist in the design process in both 2D and 3D. CAD software speeds up the design process, improves accuracy, and gives the user a wider range of tools to help design for a variety of purposes such as automotive, architecture, engineering, manufacturing, and product development.

History of CAD

Use of CAD programs started in the 1980s and could run on personal computers. This allowed engineers to do their own drafts and analysis. CAD programs eliminated the need for multiple draftsmen and other workers involved in the hand-drawing as one CAD operator could now do the work of at least three drafters using traditional methods. This resulted in down-sizing drafting departments. Students today are taught CAD software and do not study traditional methods of hand-drawn drafts.
